In the late 19th century, an impressive industrial complex was built on the Westergasfabriek site. At the time, the Purification Hall played a crucial role in the city’s energy supply: stone walls, heavy steel trusses, and coal dust dominated the space. Nothing about this raw workshop suggested that exactly the same hall would, a century and a half later, be transformed into the most advanced digital art temple in the Netherlands.
In 2022, Fabrique des Lumières opened its doors in this national historic landmark. The original brick walls and the building’s imposing height remained intact, but now serve as a gigantic canvas. From the moment it opened, the venue quickly attracted hundreds of thousands of visitors who don’t want to view art from a distance, but want to stand right in the middle of it.
Fabrique des Lumières: a 3,800 m² digital art cathedral

As soon as you step inside, you’re surrounded by light and sound. No fewer than 102 projectors bring 3,800 square meters of walls and floors to life with razor-sharp clarity, while the walls in the central hall soar to a height of 17 meters. Thanks to the spatial audio system, you literally step right into the artwork. With no set route, you move through the space at your own pace, settle down on the floor, and let the spectacle wash over you.
