Since 1909 International Women’s Day has played an incredibly important role in the fight for equal rights and it continues to play an important role to this day. Every year thousands of people come together to march and demonstrate support for women’s rights and important social, economic and political issues still impacting the lives of women to this day.
This year the women’s march in Amsterdam will be on March 5 (tomorrow), where people will march from Dam Square to Museumplein. As always, everybody is welcome as this year’s Women’s March 2022: TIME IS UP.
The first speaker will take to the stage from 12.45 pm at Dam Square and then the march to Museumplein will follow at 1.30 pm, lasting for around an hour. You can expect to hear from a roster of amazing people like Mehri Zamanbin, an Iranian-Dutch Phd researcher and founder of the invaluable Wonda Collective in Amsterdam.
Also on the roster is amazing poet Roziena Salihu who will be performing some spoken word dedicated to those who have had no choice but to flee from war and conflict. You can also look forward to hearing from Nicole Römer, Jeanette Sequeira, Femke Zeven, Dinah Bons, Jojanneke van Amesfoort and Chautuileo Tranamil, and the whole thing will be hosted by the brilliant Nadine Ridder.
You can read more about the march on the website and although most of the speakers will probably speak in Dutch, there may be a couple who will speak in English. You’ll find plenty of people on the march speaking in both languages so don’t be afraid to attend if you don’t speak Dutch.
