Countless studies have shown that exercise helps to reduce stress, to alleviate depression, and even reduce blood pressure, so it makes sense to explore our city’s green spots. We definitely have plenty of them in Amsterdam, so here are our picks for the must-visit parks.
1. Vondelpark
Vondelpark in Amsterdam Zuid offers 120 acres of space to stroll around. In the centre of the park is a beautiful pond and look out for the 3 statues stationed around the park. Particularly impressive amongst these statues is The Fish, by Pablo Picasso.
2. Amstelpark
Amstelpark is another brilliant open space to enjoy in Amsterdam Zuid. The though labyrinth might be a no-go area at the moment, there is still plenty to see. A lovely rhododendron garden runs through the park, with another area dedicated to roses, which will still be blooming even in the early autumn.
3. Westerpark
Westerpark is somewhat of an urban park. An oasis in the city, the park was built on the site of an old gas plant and you can still see some of the old gas plant buildings as you walk around. There are some fascinating statues around the park and an afternoon sitting by the water is definitely an afternoon well spent.
4. Oosterpark
Oosterpark is another urban park, built on the site of an old cemetery. It’s a stunning park with some wonderful statues and, as is the case across Amsterdam, there’s a lovely body of water to sit by and relax. The National Slavery Monument was built here, to commemorate the end of slavery in the Netherlands.
5. Sarphatipark
Sarphatipark tends to be less busy than some of the other parks, even without the usual tourists in the city. It is named after the Jewish doctor Samuel Sarphati. It’s one of the prettiest parks in Amsterdam, with lots of space for you to run around.
6. Rembrandtpark
Rembrandtpark is situated in the area of Nieuw-West, named after the 17th-century painter Rembrandt. It’s a brilliant place for a stroll amongst the trees and, if you’re lucky, you might even see some little bats, including the endangered pond bat.
7. Gaasperplaspark
In normal times, Gaasperplaspark has a water sports centre, offering canoeing, swimming, and sailing. However, it also plays the part of a nature reserve and there is over 5 km of pathway to walk or cycle down. It’s a brilliant place to get your daily dose of exercise and fresh air.
8. Beatrixpark
Beatrixpark is incredibly beautiful, especially the section that was built before 1930. Water winds through the park, as it sits at the intersection of two canals and so it is an amazing place to wander through.
9. Sloterpark
Sloterpark is one of the largest parks in Amsterdam, with plenty of room to explore and enjoy nature. There is a petting zoo and even an outdoor and indoor swimming pool. It is still a beautiful place to visit and it’s well worth spending an afternoon there.
10. Park Frankendael
Park Frankendael was once the estate of a wealthy Amsterdammer and this is still evident, from the ornate gate that welcomes you. Part of the old estate is also visible without entering the park but it is worth looking at because it still has the character of an old landhouse. The park itself is carved up into gardens with different themes and each is beautiful. It’s a great place to explore and take in on a spring afternoon.
