Amsterdam Has Been Named The Healthiest And Happiest City In The World

Although Monday mornings are still a struggle!

Online retailer Lenstore have analysed data on 44 cities and Amsterdam has topped the rankings as the happiest and healthiest place to live. This puts Amsterdam before cities like Vienna and Copenhagen, with Sydney coming in second place.

A range of factors were considered when comparing all of the cities:

  • Obesity levels
  • Life expectancy
  • Sunshine hours
  • Air and water quality
  • Happiness levels
  • Average hours worked per week
  • Number of outdoor activities
  • Number of take-away options
  • Average cost of a monthly gym membership
  • Average cost of a bottle of water

It’s no surprise that Amsterdam performed well in this study because the city has a reputation for fitness and healthy eating. Just 20.4% of adults in Amsterdam are obese, which compares to 27.8% in London, for example. Amsterdam boasts over 400 outdoor activities for people to enjoy and it goes without saying that we’re mad about bicycles, which can only be a good thing when it comes to the health of the population.

We have 1,858 hours of sunlight a year in Amsterdam, compared to Dublin’s 1,453, and people work an average of 1,434 hours in the year. This is a world away from Mexico City’s average of 2,137 hours worked per year, per person. You can read the full report on the Lenstore website.
