The Foliage Train takes passengers on a journey through stunning autumnal landscapes.
Autumn may be a bit chilly, but it’s undoubtedly one of the most beautiful seasons for travel. The crisp air, golden autumn sun, and radiant colours make for a perfect stay in nature when landscapes transform into stunning spectacles. The ‘Foliage Train’, operated by the Italian-Swiss Vigezzina – Centovalli Railway, offers a picturesque journey through some of Europe’s most beautiful, panoramic regions during autumn’s peak season.
The 52-km route spans two countries and 83 bridges in just under two hours, taking passengers from Domodossola in Italy’s Piedmont region to Locarno, Switzerland, a scenic town nestled beside the Lago Maggiore. Tickets include an optional intermediate stop on the outward or return journey so that travelers can explore a place of their choice along the railway route (e.g. Santa Maria Maggiore, Malesco, Druogno, and more). The service also offers information about sights of interest, as well as special features, events, and offers for various trips.
The train journey is described as “a unique experience, coming into contact with a diverse landscape that features a succession of deep gorges, wild mountains, rivers and waterfalls.” The Vigezzina-Centovalli Railway is deemed one of the top ten most beautiful railways in the world by Lonely Planet. It’s easy to see why!
Tickets are valid for one or two days and start at under €33 for adults in second class, so the bulk of the cost for travellers from the Netherlands will go towards getting to Italy or Switzerland. Find more info and book your tickets on their website.
