The three-country train will begin running in December and connects three cities: Liège, Maastricht, and Aachen. Of course, you can already travel between the three countries on many trains, but this specific train will run every hour.
It is an initiative of the governments of Germany, the Netherlands, and Belgium and is part of a plan to improve public transportation between the three countries. The Dutch government said during a press conference:
“The train connection links the three border regions without transfers, making it easier for residents to take the train for work, school, family visits, or recreation.”
As you probably already know, Maastricht is sandwiched between Germany and Belgium, so it makes sense that there’s a train running between the three countries that goes straight through the city. The real opportunity this train offers, however, is the ability to transfer directly to other trains in Liège and Aachen, where there are fantastic connections to places like Paris.
It’s also better for the environment to travel by train rather than take short flights. We hope this new train connecting the three countries will improve travel between the three cities, but it’s currently surprisingly difficult to even travel from Amsterdam to Maastricht. The best train route actually goes through Belgium.
