Keti Koti Festival
Every year on July 1, Amsterdam comes together to commemorate Keti Koti, a festival celebrating the abolition of slavery. This poignant day marks the moment when the last slaves were freed in 1873—a history that, though it may seem distant, is still deeply felt by many today. The Keti Koti Festival is a time to collectively reflect on the injustices of the past and to celebrate freedom, equality, and unity. While we honor the experiences of those who suffered and acknowledge the lasting consequences of slavery, the festival also aims to spread awareness. Finally, the program is also entertaining! In addition to the stage, there is a special exhibition highlighting the intertwined history of Suriname and the Netherlands. And a Caribbean market with delicious Surinamese and Antillean food!
