For fourteen years, the top spot on the Quote 500 seemed set in stone for the Heineken family. With an impressive beer empire worth €13 billion, Charlene de Carvalho-Heineken was untouchable. Until now.
Out of nowhere, Jean-Louis van der Velde is claiming the throne. The 62-year-old entrepreneur quietly amassed a fortune of no less than €26 billion through the crypto company Tether and the exchange Bitfinex. As a result, he now owns exactly twice as much as the Netherlands’ most famous beer heiress.
Fourteen Years at the Top with Heineken

Charlene de Carvalho-Heineken’s reign began in 2002. After the death of her father, Freddy, she inherited a €3.7 billion stake in the beer conglomerate. Whereas her father sought the spotlight, Charlene chose a quiet life in London. Nevertheless, her beer empire steadily grew to a massive €13 billion, making her the richest Dutch person without interruption since 2012.
Her top position in the Quote 500 seemed like a certainty for all time. No one ever seemed able to come close to the iconic brewing dynasty. Until a virtually unknown Dutchman emerged from Asia with a digital fortune that knocked the “beer queen” off her throne in one fell swoop.
New Number One with Crypto Fortune

That unknown winner is 62-year-old Jean-Louis van der Velde, born in Arnhem as Ludovicus Jan. He moved to Taiwan in the 1980s to study and built a massive tech empire in Asia. As co-founder and driving force behind the crypto company Tether and the Bitfinex exchange, he is at the heart of the world’s largest stablecoin, which generates billions in profits from interest on collateral.
Quote had been tracking him for years but kept him off the list because it remained unclear whether he still held a Dutch passport. Now that his nationality has been definitively established, he is racing straight to the top spot with an estimated net worth of €26 billion. That is exactly double the Heineken fortune: a historic turning point at which the crypto world has decisively relegated traditional family wealth to second place.
