A major power outage affected more than 3,600 households in Amsterdam-Noord on Friday morning. The outage began around 10:40 a.m. and is causing power outages in, among others, the 1022, 1025, and 1027 zip code areas.
According to grid operator Liander, the cause of the outage is at the H. Stolleplantsoen. A cable was severed there during excavation work. As a result, residents on A. Moenstraat, in the Amerbos, Dijkwater, and Warnsborn, among others, are without power.
Liander technicians are on site to repair the damaged cable. The grid operator expects the outage to be fully resolved by around 1:00 p.m.

Increasing pressure on Amsterdam’s power grid
The outage in Noord is not an isolated incident but underscores the vulnerability of urban infrastructure. Amsterdam has been hit by large-scale power outages on several previous occasions, such as the incident in which more than 50,000 households lost power.
Whereas previous major outages were often caused by failures at central distribution stations, the outage in Amsterdam-Noord is the result of a direct human error during local excavation work.
