The gripping Netflix-style drama behind Muiderslot Castle
Anyone who delves into its history will immediately understand the strategic location of the Muiderslot. Built around 1285 at the mouth of the Vecht River, this impressive moated castle served as the crucial medieval gateway to the hinterland. The castle served as an impregnable shield: with walls meters thick and a wide moat, it literally kept the enemy at bay.
But the history of this castle also features pure Netflix-style drama. In 1296, the castle’s builder, Count Floris V, was kidnapped by his own nobles during a falconry hunt and imprisoned in his own castle. During an escape attempt, he was brutally murdered with 22 stab wounds, after which the enemy razed the entire castle to the ground. It wasn’t until seventy years later that the fairytale castle was rebuilt.
A Peek Inside a 17th-Century Fairy Tale
Anyone who crosses the historic drawbridge will immediately discover why this castle is so incredibly photogenic. In the 17th century, Muiderslot underwent a major transformation under its famous resident, P.C. Hooft. Instead of a cold, military fortress, the castle was transformed into an atmospheric, creative haven.
Today, you literally step into a time capsule here. The rooms are beautifully furnished with original furniture, historical artifacts, and 17th-century paintings. It is this perfectly preserved, historic grandeur that gives the castle that unique and magical atmosphere you won’t find anywhere else in the Netherlands.
Why even Walt Disney would be jealous of this place
The fact that Muiderslot still looks so spectacular today is nothing short of a minor miracle. In 1825, the castle was so dilapidated that it was nearly demolished and turned into scrap. Fortunately, the castle was saved at the last minute and restored by the famous architect Pierre Cuypers. Since no one knew exactly what the castle looked like in the Middle Ages, he let his imagination run wild and added extra battlements for the ultimate look.
The result is the perfect, square water castle: complete with round corner towers, an impressive moat, and the historic Warmoeshof vegetable garden. It’s a living fairy tale, free to admire from the outside and tucked away right in our own backyard.
