Wherever you are in Amsterdam, legendary ghosts with their own stories roam everywhere
1. Bloedstraat
Bloedstraat runs from Nieuwmarkt, where prisoners were once executed, to the canal. Apparently, the blood from the executions flowed directly from Nieuwmarkt into the canal, hence the name “Bloedstraat.” Moreover, the street is said to be doubly cursed. There was once a Franciscan monastery in the neighborhood, where the Blood Council took place in the 16th century. The Blood Council is a particularly disturbing chapter in Dutch history, during which alleged political rebels were executed on the orders of the King of Spain. The ghosts of those executed are said to haunt Bloedstraat to this very day…
2. Spooksteeg

3. The Spinning House
Spinning houses were widespread in Europe well into the 19th century and served as workhouses for women who were forced to spin yarn. These locations are known for their eerie atmosphere, and the one in Amsterdam is no exception. According to local legend, a priest who lived in the house took his own life in one of the bedrooms because he could not reconcile his devotion to God with his feelings for one of the women. The Spinhuis, which has now been converted into a hotel, has become a place of ghostly apparitions; both staff and guests report encounters with the priest’s spirit in the very room where he met his tragic end.
4. Dam Square
The Dam, located directly in front of the Royal Palace, is a well-known meeting place for both tourists and locals. Although today it is a bustling hub of fun and celebration, it was once a grim scene during the Spanish Inquisition, where countless executions took place. Many were burned as witches in this square, and it is believed that their restless spirits still roam here. Visitors often report an uneasy feeling when walking across the square, as if the echoes of the past are palpable amid the lively atmosphere.
5. Montelbaan Tower
