Every year, Resonance Consultancy, a global place branding consultancy specializing in tourism, real estate, and economic development, compiles a ranking of the best cities in Europe and the world. To compile this ranking, the company measures and compares the relative quality of the place, its reputation, and the competitive position of urban centers around the globe.
But what specific factors do they look at exactly? And where does Amsterdam rank?
Amsterdam ranks in the top 10 of the best cities in Europe in 2024
“The ‘Europe’s Best Cities 2024’ ranking compares the overall performance of more than 180 major cities in metropolitan areas with over 500,000 residents, based on a wide range of criteria, to determine the top 100 places to live, visit, and invest in Europe,” says Chris Fair, president and CEO of Resonance.
Some of the criteria taken into account include, for example, the quality of urban life, infrastructure and institutions, cultural life and events, population diversity, prosperity, as well as the city’s image in the media and its international openness.
London, Paris, and Berlin top this ranking. Amsterdam, meanwhile, holds a very honorable 8th place! In explaining this choice, Resonance highlights the city’s social responsibility, particularly in the crisis surrounding the reception of refugees. In addition, Amsterdam’s efforts to curb “party tourism” and its focus on quality of life are also taken into account. Finally, the capital’s many renowned museums and shops are also mentioned.

These are the 10 cities at the top of the ranking:
- London, United Kingdom
- Paris, France
- Berlin, Germany
- Rome, Italy
- Madrid, Spain
- Prague, Czech Republic
- Barcelona, Spain
- Amsterdam, Netherlands
- Istanbul, Turkey
- Milan, Italy
