Donuts are said to have been invented in the Netherlands and brought to New York (when it was still called New Amsterdam ) by Dutch colonists. These days, they’re seen as a quintessentially American treat, but without those good old Dutch oliebollen, those big donut chains would never have existed! Who would have thought!?
1. Corner Bakery
Corner Bakery is the perfect place for breakfast, and breakfast always tastes best with a donut (in our humble opinion). These brightly colored beauties aren’t the only colorful treats on the menu, and if you go here, you should definitely try one of the freakshakes . These towering milkshakes are topped with all kinds of delicious treats, including those amazing donuts. It’s also—without a doubt—one of the most Instagrammable spots in Amsterdam. Just take a look at that photo above!

2. Ree7
Speaking of freakshakes: at Ree7, you can get a delicious version topped with a donut. They serve countless delicious dishes here, but for us, it’s all about the donuts. They also serve freshly ground coffee, which, as we all know, pairs perfectly with a good donut.

3. Rene’s Croissants
What’s a croissant shop doing on this list? Well, the croissants are incredible, but in our opinion, the donuts might be even better. If you love chocolate donuts, you’re in luck, because these tasty treats are packed with them. Yummy.

4. Saint Jean
Okay, these delicious cruffins aren’t technically donuts. They’re a cross between muffins and croissants, filled with delicious creams flavored with amazing ingredients like pistachio. But if it’s soft and tasty and filled with something just as delicious, we’re putting it on our list anyway, because everyone needs to try them.

5. The Coffee District
The bakers at Coffee District change the selection every day, so there’s no guarantee you’ll find donuts when you walk in, but if you do , you’re in luck! Plus, there’s no better place to grab a cup of coffee, and the combination of donut and coffee is our favorite for an afternoon snack.

6. Amsterdonuts
This spot probably offers the most creative donuts in all of Amsterdam. They’re handmade, look gorgeous, and are absolutely delicious. Go for the classic Amsterdam chocolate donut or go all out with one of their amazing creations. The pistachio donut is finger-licking good!
