Just behind Amsterdam’s bustling canals lies one of the oldest botanical gardens in the world. In the Hortus Botanicus, time seems to have stood still for centuries, but appearances can be deceiving. Behind the historic gates lies a forgotten historical fact: the direct origin of all South American coffee.
The secret behind your cup of coffee

In 1706 , the Dutch East India Company (VOC) brought a single rare coffee plant from Yemen to the Amsterdam Hortus Botanicus. The plant thrived so well in the greenhouses that the city council presented a cutting to King Louis XIV of France. That turned out to be a historic masterstroke.
Through French and Dutch colonies, cuttings from this specific Amsterdam plant made their way to Suriname and Martinique. From there, the crop spread across the entire continent. As a result, virtually all modern Latin American Arabica coffee is directly descended from that single historic mother plant from the Amsterdam garden.
Three climate zones under one roof

In addition to its rich history, the Hortus offers an impressive visual spectacle. The absolute highlight is the famous Three-Climate Greenhouse, where you can travel through three completely different worlds in just a few steps.
You walk directly from the humid tropics into the subtropical climate and the bone-dry desert. Among the whimsical cacti and meter-tall palm trees, you experience the enormous diversity of the global plant kingdom. In this way, the garden combines centuries-old history with a unique stroll through nature.
Rare flora and iconic attractions

Spanning an area of one and a half hectares, the Amsterdam Hortus is home to one of the most diverse plant collections in Europe. As soon as you walk along the paths, you’ll discover botanical treasures from all corners of the globe.
A real eye-catcher is the historic collection of cycads, ancient palm ferns that were already around in the time of the dinosaurs. The Butterfly House also attracts many visitors. Here, hundreds of tropical butterflies flit among flowering nectar plants. Thus, every corner of the garden offers a new, colorful sight.
