What do you do when daily groceries become unaffordable or you’re at risk of losing your connection to the neighborhood? Prices at the supermarket remain high, and social assistance often comes with complicated requirements or long waiting lists. To ensure that no one falls through the cracks, a powerful initiative is emerging from within the city itself.
With the help of hundreds of volunteers and local partners, the organization BuurtBuik collects metric tons of surplus food every week from supermarkets and produce vendors. In neighborhood kitchens throughout Amsterdam, they transform this rescued food into healthy, free multi-course meals for anyone who wants to join the table.
The magic of the “mystery box” menu

Every cooking session begins as a race against the clock on wheels. Volunteers crisscross the neighborhood on cargo bikes to pick up surplus food from local supermarkets, produce stands, and restaurants. What’s inside the crates is always a surprise: from boxes full of fresh pumpkins to overripe fruit and rich herbs.
There’s no cookbook waiting in the community kitchen. The team comes up with a creative multi-course menu or a fresh, hot soup on the spot. Surplus food is also shared immediately with other social organizations, while vegetable trimmings go to the petting zoo. That way, absolutely nothing goes to waste.
Food brings the neighborhood together
At BuurtBuik’s long tables, all social differences in the neighborhood fade away. Whether you’re a student struggling to make ends meet each month, a senior living alone who longs for companionship, or simply want to get to know your neighbors better: everyone is welcome to join the table for free. There are deliberately no income requirements, admission tests, or complicated registration processes. The fresh meal serves as the ultimate icebreaker to bring fellow city residents together in a relaxed setting.
To ensure a welcoming atmosphere for everyone, the locations enforce one strict rule: absolutely no photos or videos are allowed. This guaranteed privacy creates a safe environment where visitors truly feel at home and often go on to become volunteers themselves.
From Amsterdam to a Nationwide Success

What began in 2014 as a pilot project in Amsterdam-Zuid has grown into a nationwide success with 22 locations in cities such as Amsterdam, Utrecht, and Rotterdam. In this way, the organization combats both food waste and social isolation at the same time.
The social impact of the Total organization in 2025:
- 91,956 kg of high-quality food saved from the trash heap
- 38,315 free and healthy meals served
- 1,026 active volunteers hard at work every week
