It’s official: the iconic“From Dom to Dam” fast-cycle route between Utrecht and Amsterdam is definitely going to be built. The provinces of Utrecht and North Holland (Amsterdam Transport Region), together with four municipalities, have reached an administrative agreement on the route.
Plans for the F2 route date back to 1990 and are often referred to behind the scenes as the “mother of all through-cycle routes.” This high-speed bike path runs largely parallel to the A2 highway and the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal.
New tunnels and safer bridges along the route

Before cyclists and e-bike riders can ride nonstop from the Dom to the Dam, there is still a lot of work to be done along the route. The most expensive and far-reaching part is the construction of the Boorstraat Tunnel in Utrecht, a 39-million-euro project scheduled for 2032.
This tunnel not only helps through-cyclists but also opens up new residential areas such as Wisselspoor and the Cartesius Triangle. In addition, the outdated and narrow Demka Bridge over the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal is being renovated. In the meantime, dangerous fencing and sharp hairpin turns along the route are already being made safer.
Construction begins in 2028: what else is changing?

Large-scale construction will begin in 2028 and cost at least 57 million euros. In addition to the major tunnels, the Westkanaaldijk, for example, will be transformed into a well-organized bike street with additional lighting.
According to regional research, the benefits far outweigh the costs. “We want to make cycling a logical, attractive, and healthy alternative for more and more people,” explained Provincial Executive Member André van Schie upon the announcement of the agreement.
