Amsterdam Central has been named the third-best train station in Europe in the 2026 European Railway Station Index. The station has thus climbed seven spots compared to 2025 thanks to improved service and excellent punctuality. In this way, the 19th-century icon designed by architect Pierre Cuypers effortlessly transforms from a historic monument into one of the continent’s most modern public transit hubs.
Why Amsterdam Central is Rising in the European Rankings

The rise from tenth place in 2025 is due to extended ticket counter hours and a significantly expanded range of retail options. Furthermore, the station scores exceptionally high on punctuality and reliability—a category in which the Dutch railways lead Europe. Thanks to these targeted upgrades, the hub is climbing to the very top of the European rankings.
How are the other Dutch stations performing?
Amsterdam isn’t the only success story on the rail network. Utrecht Central (14th) and Rotterdam Central (16th) also secured spots in the European top twenty. Across the board, the Netherlands scores exceptionally well on punctuality and minimal delays, making the country’s public transit hubs among the most reliable on the continent.
