Amsterdam is known worldwide for its vibrant nightlife, but during the Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE), the city transforms into a whole different beast. What began in 1996 as a small-scale gathering for a handful of pioneers has, over the course of thirty years, grown into a massive event that draws partygoers and professionals from all corners of the world.
From 300 pioneers in a hotel to a citywide takeover

What once began as a modest gathering for a handful of music lovers has, over the course of thirty years, grown into a world-class cultural phenomenon. In 1996, the very first edition took place at a hotel on Vijzelgracht. At the time, the three-day event attracted only 300 visitors and featured thirty performances, spread across iconic venues such as Paradiso, the Melkweg, and Club Escape.
Three decades later, that small-scale networking event has transformed into a five-day citywide takeover. With more than 1,200 events at over 300 venues and a record number of more than 600,000 visitors, the entire capital transforms every October into the undisputed epicenter of international electronic music.
Networking by day, partying by night

The event’s success lies in its unique dual role. During the day, it’s all about knowledge, networking, and the latest trends in the music world. At historic venues such as Felix Meritis and DeLaMar, professionals, startups, and new talent come together for conferences, workshops, and lectures.
As soon as night falls, the focus shifts to the stages. More than 3,500 national and international artists take over the stages, ranging from intimate underground clubs and iconic pop venues to major cultural hotspots. The daytime program flows seamlessly into a nonstop nighttime party.
Innovation, sustainability, and creativity

Over three decades, the event has evolved into much more than a collection of parties. With initiatives such as ADE Arts & Culture, the organization bridges the gap between electronic music, theater, film, and visual arts.
In addition, ADE Lab serves as a talent platform for the newest generation of producers and DJs, while ADE Green focuses on sustainability, inclusivity, and safety within the nightlife scene. In this way, the platform not only looks back on dance culture but also actively helps shape its future.
