More than ever, people are flocking to Amsterdam’s vegan restaurants. A couple of years ago, it was revealed that people in the Netherlands eat the highest amount of meat substitutes per capita in Europe.
People decide to go meat-free for different reasons and Amsterdam’s foodie culture has shifted so much over the past couple of decades that it’s almost unrecognizable. As people strive to cut down on the number of animal products that they consume, all kinds of inventive and creative spaces have popped up across the city, and Amsterdam is truly leading the way in vegan cuisine.
1. Mr and Mrs Watson
📍Linnaeuskade 3h, 1098 BC
Mr And Mrs Watson serves amazing, gourmet vegan food, including the most delicious burgers. Most of the burgers are whiskey smoked, giving them a deep, fiery flavour.
The ‘meat’ is tender, very rich in flavour and seasoned beautifully, and their buns are lovely and fluffy. Plus, their vegan cheeses are definitely not to be missed. Their vegan faux goat’s cheese dip is to die for, and the prosecco cheese fondue will put you into a food coma, it’s so good.
2. Vegan Junk Food Bar
Whatever you’re craving, this place has something for you. In the mood for fish and chips? You can order a huge portion from Vegan Junk Food Bar. If faux fish isn’t your thing then the vegan shawarma has that meaty taste, and a side of rainbow fries will not only taste amazing but look phenomenal on your plate.
In fact, everything looks phenomenal on the plate. Bright pink sauces, colourful buns and beautiful coconut-based ice cream create such joyful plates of food that you can’t help but be impressed when it all arrives.
3. The Avocado Show
The Avocado Show isn’t strictly a vegan restaurant, but it serves so many vegan dishes that it’s worth adding to the list. They’re all about avocados at this friendly spot and their avocados are sourced responsibly, too.
From tasty vegan burgers to delicious vegan pancakes, everything contains avocado. So, if you’re into this creamy superfood then you’re going to love it here!
4. Mediamatic Eten
📍Dijksgracht 6, 1019 BS
At Mediamatic you can enjoy some delicious vegan food with the most amazing views. It’s a brilliant place to go if you’d like a peaceful, quiet meal because you can eat in one of their little greenhouses, set up with cute fairy lights by the water.
So, if you have guests visiting and you’d like them to have an incredible experience, Mediamatic is a sure bet with its unique setup.
5. Mooshka
📍Van Woustraat 110, 1073 LT
If you’re looking for vegan soul food then Mooshka is the place for you! A delicious mix of dishes from the Caribbean, Africa and the Southern United States feature on the menu, and you’re sure to leave satiated. You can also order Dutch classics like bitterballen, all made with entirely vegan ingredients, and even cheesecake made without dairy.
6. Men Impossible
📍Hazenstraat 19H, 1016 SM
Ramen is something that can make anyone smile, especially when it’s completely vegan. At Men Impossible they create deep flavours from plant-based products, creating moreish ramen, and there’s a set menu here so you need to book via the website in advance. However, it’s well worth the wait.
7. Deer Mama
📍Ceintuurbaan 71, 1072 EW
Deer Mama serves proper, vegan comfort food. Here they serve mostly American food like vegan chicken and waffles or pancakes.
Plus, there are loads of tasty milkshakes to choose from and the place is just adorable. It’s reminiscent of an American diner but kinda scaled back so that the soft, pastel colours can really shine through.
There are soft-serve sundaes and even boozy milkshakes alongside vegan beer. It’s open from 9 am – 9 pm and you can book a table on the website.
