Just two hours from Amsterdam, you can find one of the most original tributes to Van Gogh – But you can only see it at night and by bike!
Brabant, Van Gogh's home region, features the Van Gogh cycle path — a unique glow-in-the-dark route inspired by ‘Starry Night’, where solar lights and shimmering stones trace swirling stars beneath your wheels.
Van Gogh and bikes define Dutch culture — and in Brabant, they meet in a path that glows with art and light you can only experience in the dark. Inspired by Starry Night, the Van Gogh–Roosegaarde cycle path is a striking creation by Dutch innovator and artist Daan Roosegaarde. Blending art and technology, it offers one of the most original tributes to the famous painter. Grab your bike and follow Van Gogh’s footsteps on a journey that literally immerses you in the Starry Night. But, instead of looking up, gaze down and watch how the sparkling lights beneath your wheels outshine the starry sky above.
Cycling through Van Gogh’s art
The place where the artist first saw the light of day is now a place to experience light at night: the Van Gogh–Roosegaarde cycle path. Located between Eindhoven and Nuenen, it forms part of a 435-kilometer route spanning the entire province of North Brabant. This 600-meter light part connects the Opwettense Watermill in Nuenen to the Collse Watermill in Eindhoven, both also painted by Van Gogh. This stunning bike path feels like stepping into a painting and makes night cycling even more magical.
Van Gogh cycle path: The magic of art meeting innovation
The Van Gogh–Roosegaarde cycle path is part of the Smart Highway project, which develops innovative and sustainable roads. Studio Roosegaarde and Heijmans designed this 600-meter solar-powered path and launched it in 2012. The illuminated section consists of thousands of colorful stones that absorb sunlight during the day. At night, they gently glow green, turning the trail into a shimmering scene inspired by Van Gogh’s Starry Night. The path guides cyclists safely while honoring Dutch culture. It’s free to use and serves as a lasting, unique tribute to one of the Netherlands’ most famous artists. This project is a clear example of how the Smart Highway initiative builds innovative, green and inspiring infrastructure.
