Amsterdam’s most vibrant Arabic cultural celebration is back—and this year, it’s turning 20! SOUK Festival takes over the Concertgebouw once again, transforming the iconic venue into a magical souk packed with music, dance, poetry, and storytelling. From legendary artists to fresh new surprises, this anniversary edition promises six hours of unforgettable performances.
Step Into the Souk: Where Cultures Collide in the Concertgebouw
The SOUK Festival isn’t just an event—it’s a full-on cultural takeover. For one dazzling night, the Concertgebouw morphs into a bustling Arabic marketplace. And all complete with traditional music, storytelling corners, immersive art, and the scents of spiced snacks wafting through the air. The journey kicks off with a musical voyage inspired by 14th-century explorer Ibn Battuta, brought to life with symphonic flair by the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra and a world-premiere ballet by Het Nationale Ballet. Think grand adventure, with a soundtrack to match.
Stars of the Arab World Shine Bright in Amsterdam
The stage is set for Arabic music royalty! Carole Samaha, the Egyptian-Lebanese pop icon with a voice that blends operatic power and pop energy, returns to the SOUK stage for the first time since 2014. Expect emotional highs and glamorous hits as she performs with the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra. Also taking the spotlight is Naseer Shamma. Iraq’s legendary ud virtuoso and a UNESCO Artist for Peace, whose hypnotic strings weave stories of ancient traditions with modern soul. With Bassem Akiki at the baton and a mix of Arabic and Western musicians, this orchestra-meets-the-East lineup is something truly unique.
From Medina to Modernity: A Festival Like No Other
Wander the foyers before the main show and you’ll find yourself transported—from the medinas of Marrakesh to the streets of modern Beirut. SOUK’s extensive foyer program celebrates the diversity of Arabic heritage. From traditional dance to diaspora beats, nostalgic poetry to cutting-edge installations. And don’t miss the Rihla. It’s a new exhibition showcasing artworks inspired by the journeys of Ibn Battuta, the legendary 14th-century explorer who crossed continents from North Africa to the Middle East and Asia. And yes! There’s a SOUK Kids mini-festival too. It’s perfect for families looking to get in on the action earlier in the day. With 20 years of bridging cultures behind it, SOUK remains a one-of-a-kind festival where the magic of the Middle East meets the heartbeat of Amsterdam.
