Maritozzi are a moreish Roman treat: sweet, cream-filled buns with an irresistibly romantic origin. It used to be one of the only sweet treats that Catholics were allowed to eat during Lent.
Young lovers would gift them to one another on the first Friday of March and that’s how they got their name. Marito means ‘husband’ in Italian, which became the word maritozzo (singular) or maritozzi (plural). Legend has it that those who made the most delicious maritozzi would be the first to get married.
Never eaten one before? Get yourself to Salvo Bakehouse where they pride themselves on the quality of these delicious pastries. You won’t be able to eat more than one of these indulgent treats because they’re so rich but your eyes will definitely be bigger than your belly.
Salvo Bakehouse only opened on January 12, 2023, and since then it’s been a hit with Amsterdammers. This summer, you can expect a new, seasonal menu including delightfully summery maritozzi and plenty more besides that!
Everything there, of course, pairs perfectly with a fresh cup of Italian coffee. Plus, it’s not just the aforementioned buns that will have you drooling.
How about a crispy, filled cannoli? Or perhaps some tasty tiramisu? There are also plenty of savoury options to treat yourself to and they are often collaborating with other businesses, organising evenings where you can taste something entirely different.
Just last month you could enjoy a four-course meal featuring fresh pasta and natural wines at Salvo Bakehouse as part of a collaboration between several Amsterdam businesses.
