Watching films in a different language is a great way to learn but it doesn’t appeal to everybody, and sometimes people just want to watch things in a language in which they’re already fluent. There’s no shame in it. After all, learning languages is tiring and Pathé Expat Night is there to entertain you.
In the Netherlands films tend to be subtitled in Dutch, rather than dubbed into Dutch, so you can easily see a film with English audio. However, when the film is not in English and it’s subtitled in Dutch those who are not expert Dutch speakers will find it really difficult to follow.
However, there is somewhere that you can watch international films from Spain, Italy and even further afield with English subtitles! Pathé Expat Night at Pathé cinemas takes place once a month and it’s a great place to meet people who have moved to Amsterdam from different countries.
That’s because, after the film, attendees can stay for a drink and a chat, so it’s a super social affair. It’s great for anybody who might feel a little homesick or isolated in their new city.
So what’s on this month?
Pathé Expat Night runs every third Thursday of the month, so next time will be August 18 and they’re showing Supereroi, an Italian film. You can see it at Pathé Amsterdam Noord, Pathé Arena or Pathé City, and also at any of the chain’s selected cinemas across the Netherlands.
It’s €13.50 a ticket and Supereroi is definitely worth seeing. It’s a lovey dovey kind of film but it’s also fairly dramatic, following long-term relationships as they age and questioning how couples can stay together and forgive one another over time. You can read more about it and book tickets on the Pathé website.
