Now that Christmas is over, we can look forward to the new year and with the new year comes tulip season! This year’s National Tulip Day will be celebrated in Museumplein, which will be filled with beautiful flowers, free to Amsterdammers and visitors.
Ordinarily, the flower garden is located in Dam Square but that’s changing this year. On January 21, from 1 pm you’ll be able to pick a bunch of gorgeous tulips from the 20,000 flowers that will brighten Museumplein.
As always, this celebration of National Tulip Day will be spectacular, but if you want to secure your own bunch then you will need to get there early because the flowers are always popular. This year will mark the 11th National Tulip Day and back in 2019 (pre-pandemic), there were 17,000 visitors to Dam Square.
Of course, these particular tulips are grown indoors, in greenhouses. The tulips in and around Amsterdam won’t bloom until March when the stunning Amsterdam Tulip Festival takes place and the fields of Keukenhof transform into a rainbow of beautiful blooms.
National Tulip Day is reported worldwide on TV stations and we’re sure that social media will really relish it this year. After all, the pandemic really pressed pause on celebrations last year and even the year before.
So, just as the blooming tulips signify the start of a new year, this National Tulip Day signals a fresh slate for Amsterdam, in a way. This year we can really celebrate!
