Explore the buzzing world of Amsterdam’s bees

This weekend, Amsterdam locals can visit five unique locations as part of the nationwide Open Beekeeping Days. From community gardens in Oost to urban rooftops in the Jordaan, each apiary offers a peek into the complex world of bees. Friendly beekeepers will guide you through live hive demos and teach you about pollination. They will also share fascinating facts, like how a single colony can hold over 60,000 bees working in harmony! Best of all, there’s honey tasting—sweet, golden, and made right in your neighborhood.
Why bees matter more than you think
Beyond the honey, these open days are a chance to learn just how crucial bees are to our food supply and local ecosystems. Without pollinators, much of the produce aisle would be bare. Amsterdam’s beekeepers are passionate about raising awareness, from explaining seasonal bee diets to sharing how you can support urban biodiversity. Who knows—you might walk away inspired to take a beginner’s beekeeping course yourself! With more than 11,000 beekeepers in the Netherlands, it’s a growing, eco-conscious community worth joining.
