Amsterdam’s Food Center is a massive wholesale market that supplies loads of the city’s shops, restaurants, and cafes with all kinds of produce. This colossal market already measured a whopping 40 hectares and now this place is about to become the centre of a new neighbourhood.
A new zoning plan will see the south side of the Food Center’s Central Market Hall turned into housing. Meanwhile, the north side of the hall will maintain its purpose as a food market. Around 1,700 new homes will be built here, and although they’ll vary in size they will all feature outdoor space.
It looks as though these homes will go up for sale this summer, but that doesn’t mean that construction will be finished then. Earlier this year we wrote about the revitalisation and renovation of the Central Market Hall and so we’re glad to hear that the incredible atmosphere created by recent projects will survive. It will act as a kind of central social area within the neighbourhood, with places to relax, have fun, buy delicious produce and food and socialise with neighbours.
The neighbourhood will also feature a beautiful town square and, best of all, it’s going to be a very green area, full of lush open spaces to be enjoyed. There will even be a place to moor boats along the canal, and honestly, it sounds like heaven!
