Every year, Resonance Consultancy, a global place branding advisor that specializes in tourism, real estate and economic development, establishes a ranking of the best cities in Europe and the world. To build it, the firm measures and compares the relative quality of the place, its reputation, and the competitive identity of the planet’s urban centers.
But what specific factors do they consider? And where does Amsterdam stand in the ranking?
Amsterdam is in the top 10 best cities in Europe in 2024
“The 2024 Europe’s Best Cities rankings benchmark the overall performance of more than 180 principal cities in metropolitan areas with populations of more than 500,000, based on a wide variety of measures, in order to identify the Top 100 places to live, visit and invest in Europe,” says Resonance President & CEO Chris Fair.
For instance, some of the measures considered are the quality of urban life, the infrastructures and institutions, cultural life and events, population diversity, prosperity, as well as the media image of the city and its international openness.
London, Paris, and Berlin are at the top of this ranking. Meawhile, Amsterdam occupies a very honorable 8th place! In the comments explaining this choice, Resonance highlights the city’s civic responsibility, notably in the refugee accommodation crisis. In addition to that, Amsterdam’s effort to control “party tourism” and focus on livability are also taken into account. And finally, the capital’s many renowned museums and shopping sites are also mentioned.
Here are the 10 cities at the top of the ranking:
- London, United Kingdom
- Paris, France
- Berlin, Germany
- Rome, Italy
- Madrid, Spain
- Prague, Czech Republic
- Barcelona, Spain
- Amsterdam, Netherlands
