Maritozzi are an addictive Roman treat: sweet, cream-filled pastries with an irresistibly romantic origin. In the past, they were one of the few sweet treats Catholics were allowed to eat during Lent.
Young lovers would give them to each other on the first Friday of March, and that’s how they got their name. Marito means “husband” in Italian, which became the word maritozzo (singular) or maritozzi (plural). According to legend, those who made the tastiest maritozzi would be the first to get married.

Have you never tried one? Then head to Salvo Bakehouse, where they take pride in the quality of this delicious pastry. You won’t be able to eat more than one of these delightful treats because they’re so rich, but your eyes will certainly be bigger than your stomach.
Salvo Bakehouse opened on January 12, 2023, and has been a hit with Amsterdammers ever since. This summer, you can expect a new, seasonal menu featuring delicious summer maritozzi and much more!
Of course, everything there pairs perfectly with a fresh cup of Italian coffee. Plus, it’s not just the aforementioned pastries that will make your mouth water.

How about a crispy, filled cannoli? Or perhaps a delicious tiramisu? There are also plenty of savory options to treat yourself to, and they often collaborate with other businesses, organizing evenings where you can sample something completely different.
Last month, you could enjoy a four-course menu featuring fresh pasta and natural wines at Salvo Bakehouse, as part of a collaboration between various Amsterdam-based businesses.
