Since the start of the pandemic, Amsterdam’s many fantastic museums and galleries have begun digitizing their collections. This means that no matter where you are or what restrictions you face, you can always enjoy a bit of culture. For those of us who visit Amsterdam’s galleries and museums, these sites have been a source of entertainment. Plus, browsing the Rijksmuseum’s collection is a welcome break from binge-watching Netflix.
1. Rijksmuseum
The Rijksmuseum is an integral part of Amsterdam, and the museum has done a fantastic job digitizing its collections. There are over 700,000 pieces online that you can view from home; all you have to do is visit the website. You can also watch a series of YouTube videos in which curators discuss their favorite pieces. That’ll keep you busy for a while!
2. Stedelijk
If you love modern and contemporary art, the Stedelijk is an absolute must-see. Fortunately, you can watch guided tours and lectures online via the YouTube channel. These videos are truly worth watching, featuring explorations of the Surinamese school and a lecture on queer history, among other topics.
3. Anne Frank House
The Anne Frank House plays a very important role in educating people about the horrors of the Holocaust, and every year countless people come to see the Secret Annex. In fact, so many people visit that the crowds could be off-putting even before the pandemic. However, you can view the Secret Annex online via the Anne Frank House website.
4. Rembrandt House
The Dutch artist Rembrandt from the Golden Age is world-famous, but it’s always worth learning more about him. You can do that right from home by watching the videos on the Rembrandt House website, including a fantastic video about how he created his etchings.
5. Van Gogh Museum
The world has long been obsessed with Van Gogh, but lately his work seems to have surged in popularity. We’re lucky to have the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, and while we can’t visit it right now, we can take a virtual tour online.
