Living here can be quite pricey!
The cost of living Amsterdam has increased significantly between last year and this year, according to Mercer’s annual Cost Of Living ranking. In 2020 the city was a far less expensive place to live, ranking as the 64th most expensive city in the world. However, this year Amsterdam has made it to number 44, leaving 20 cities below it.
This huge increase in living costs is obviously not a plus for residents of the city, whom it seems have had to shell out more money this year than last year. However, the cold, desert city of Ashgabat in Turkmenistan took the first spot as the most expensive city in which to live. Ashgabat has had high levels of inflation since 2019, so this isn’t surprising, but it has taken the first spot from the infamously expensive Hong Kong.
So how does Amsterdam score compared to our Northern European neighbours? Well, Berlin has climbed 22 spots since last year, making it the 60th most expensive city in which to live. London has also risen up the ranks, but only by 1 spot since last year, becoming the 18th most expensive city in the world this year. So, our neighbours are also seeing a significant hike in living prices. You can download the full report on the Mercer website.
